The Unit Trap That Doubles Your Numbers
One mistake breaks more area calculations than any other: using linear conversion for a squared unit.
Say you measure a room at 120 square feet. You want it in square meters, so you divide by 3.28. The answer comes back as 36.6. That is wrong. The real answer is 11.1.
The conversion factor for area is 10.76, not 3.28. Why? Because you are converting both length and width. 3.28 squared equals 10.76. Skip that square and your numbers go up by nearly four times.
Three rules keep you out of the trap:
- Never convert area manually. Use a calculator that already knows the square factor.
- Pick your unit before typing anything. Switching mid-way breaks the math.
- Enter feet-and-inches as decimals. 10 feet 6 inches becomes 10.5, not 10.6.

How do I calculate the area of a rectangle? ▼
Multiply the length by the width. A rectangle that's 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 12 × 10 = 120 square feet. The tool does this the moment you click Calculate.
What's the formula for the area of a circle? ▼
π × radius². For a circle with a 6-foot radius, that's π × 36, which comes to roughly 113 square feet. You only need the radius. The tool handles the rest.
How do I calculate the area of an L-shape? ▼
Split the L into two rectangles, work out each one, then add them together. An L-shape made of a 12×10 rectangle and a 6×5 rectangle has an area of 120 + 30 = 150 square feet. The tool walks you through this automatically.
How do I convert square feet to square meters? ▼
Multiply the square footage by 0.0929. So 120 square feet becomes 120 × 0.0929, which is about 11.1 square meters. This area calculator does the conversion for you and shows both numbers at once.
What's the difference between area and perimeter? ▼
